Services

Tuning

Tuning is the most common service performed on any piano. Most manufacturers recommend tuning your piano every 6-12 months.

Tuning visits typically include minor repairs as well as regulation and voicing touchups as time allows, included in the cost of the tuning!

Pitch Corrections: Pianos which have not been tuned in a while might need to be tuned twice, a procedure called a pitch correction. This process takes longer than a standard tuning visit. If you're concerned that your piano might need a pitch correction, you can get a free tuning app and measure the A above middle C. If it is lower than 438.5 Hz, or higher than 442.5 Hz, your piano might need a pitch correction.

Regulation

Regulation is the process of adjusting the mechanical components of the piano for optimal expression and control. It is recommended to have your piano regulated every five years. Regulation can fix problems like notes not sounding when playing softly, or notes not repeating fast enough.

Many small problems, or problems with individual notes can be solved within the course of a standard tuning visit. It is important for your technician to be familiar with your instrument before they can know if a full regulation is right for you.

Voicing

Voicing is the process of manipulating the tone of the piano using the careful application of needles and hardening solutions on the hammer felt. Voicing can bring new life to an old piano or could refine and elevate an already excellent instrument.

Voicing is a wholistic process and often can be impacted by the state of the mechanical parts of the piano. It is recommended to ensure the regulation is in reasonably good condition before fine voicing can be done.

Voicing down, or mellowing out the tone, can typically be done in a single visit. Voicing up is a more involved process that will require at least one return visit.

Repair

Repairs encompass anything from a broken string to a clicking key. The line between repairs and regulation can seem fuzzy at times, but your technician will have the knowledge and experience to help.

As in any case, it's important for your technician to be familiar with your instrument so they can know how to best serve your needs.

Your technician will have techniques to fix a problem without the need for replacement parts. So be sure not to throw anything away!
